About This Place

Cafe Bunn Mi is a standout Vietnamese restaurant located at 417 Clement St, San Francisco, offering an authentic taste of Vietnam with a focus on pho, banh mi sandwiches, and flavorful rice plates. This cozy, casual eatery warmly invites diners to indulge in a menu that masterfully balances traditional flavors with fresh, vibrant ingredients, making it a beloved spot among locals and visitors alike.

At the heart of Cafe Bunn Mi’s appeal is its celebrated banh mi selection—each sandwich a harmonious blend of textures and tastes. The Lemongrass Steak Sandwich is a must-try, with tender, aromatic steak infused with fragrant lemongrass and layered with crisp, fresh vegetables inside perfectly soft, yet crusty bread. Equally irresistible is the Grilled Pork Banh Mi, where smoky, juicy pork marries delightfully with the signature mayo and pickled carrots, evoking memories of a lovingly prepared home-cooked meal. If you're seeking something a bit more indulgent, the Five Spice Chicken Sandwich delivers an aromatic punch, bursting with fragrant spices balanced by a subtle sweetness.

Beyond sandwiches, the restaurant’s pho and noodle dishes reveal an impressive depth of flavor. The House Special Beef Noodle Soup boasts a rich, savory broth simmered to perfection, brimming with tender beef cuts and fresh herbs, creating a comforting bowl that warms both body and soul. For those craving something heartier, the Five Spice Chicken Vermicelli offers a delightful combination of textures and tastes—from the tender chicken to the crisp greens and crunchy peanuts, all enlivened by the restaurant’s signature homemade fish sauce.

Cafe Bunn Mi also shines in its rice plate offerings. Options such as the Shaken Beef Rice Plate and Boneless Duck Rice Plate showcase expertly grilled proteins paired with fragrant jasmine rice and vibrant, crisp vegetables, delivering a satisfying and well-rounded meal. The dishes are generously portioned, inviting you to savor every bite without needing to rush.

The beverage menu is equally compelling, featuring unique creations like the refreshing Mojito Style Lemonade and the creamy, rich Avocado Shake—perfect complements to the bold and aromatic flavors of the food. Traditional Vietnamese drinks such as the Vietnamese Iced Coffee and Three Color Bean Drink also provide a sweet, cooling contrast to the house’s savory specialties.

What elevates Cafe Bunn Mi is not just the exceptional food but also the authentic, welcoming atmosphere. The establishment feels intimate yet lively, a place where the aromas and sounds pull you into a genuine Vietnamese street food experience without leaving San Francisco. The fast yet attentive service, combined with the palpable passion for quality, makes every visit memorable.

Cafe Bunn Mi is a quaint and casual vietnamese shop. The only thing I can say is, it’s in the name, get the banh mi as they are absolutely delicious. Their crispy duck or chicken are amazingly delectable for the non traditional proteins. Their bread is soft yet crunchy, their mayo is smooth and tasty, and their helpings are generous like grandma used to serve. Additionally, their peanut sauce for the spring rolls is the truth. Fantastic viet food here, and I will definitely return over and over.

I have now tried every reputable Bahn mi shop in San Francisco and I will say they have the best ones yet. The balance between the meat and veggies is perfect and everything is super fresh and flavorful. The sandwich and veggies are crunchy and the meat soft. The lemongrass steak is to die for. They also have other options like pho that seemed legit. I need to go back and try. Seating inside is available. They only take cash.

A few weeks ago, I came across this place while I was around Clement St. I've walked by it a few times before but always noticed that it always had a line and busy around lunchtime. I am one who never likes to line up for food in SF due to the fact that we can get good food anywhere we turn in this city. However, this particular day, I realised it was empty, but I found out later that I was lucky I came in a few minutes right before the lunch rush. I got myself a window seat facing the street and enjoyed the food that now, a few weeks later, I kept going back on a weekly basis a few times twice a week. Now it's like a Friday and sometimes Monday ritual to go walk around Clement St, pick up my sauce and yummy food around the area, and have something at Cafe Bunn Mi. Place is clean, Menu has variety of choices, Staff are amaizing and the food prep is super fast and my order was out within 10min in my case. The sandwiches are to die for eventho a little more expensive than a few of the places around the Avenues, but it's so worth it with the portions. And the noddle bowls are now becoming my favorite. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fast Vietnamese place around Clement St where food tastes good and the service is fast. I'd recommend going in a little early or after a lunch rush if u wanna take your time and enjoy your food. A 5star in my book, and I am glad I decided to walk in to try it out cause in 3 weeks, I think I have done 5 dine in and 3 times to go.
